Tim Sawyer Wins Gary Miller Mod Race July 14th At Stateline Speedway

POST FALLS, IDAHO – July 15, 2007 – After chasing race leader Rich Gimeno for 85-laps Spokane’s Tim Sawyer made the pass for the lead on the inside to win the 8th annual running of the Gary Miller Memorial Modified race Saturday night at Stateline Speedway.

Sawyer made his move around Gimeno on a restart with fifteen laps remaining. Gimeno had held off Sawyer on the long green flag runs but was unable to keep his car on the bottom groove exiting the turns opening the door to Sawyer.

Gimeno made one last charge after a caution for a one car spin on lap 88 but was unable to close the gap on the restart, allowing Sawyer to win his second race of the season.

Gimeno finished second after leading the most laps. Dan Noble took third, Randy Lerch fourth; both ran in the top five the entire race.

Frank Volz Jr., who set fast time and was charging along with Sawyer towards the top spot, was knocked out of the race on lap 47 when he made contact with a slower car while attempting to run the outside line.

Sawyer also won a dash along with Montana’s Ron Wright. Mark Weaver took the win the B heat. Gimeno won the A Heat.

Wes Helgeson darted to the lead in the 25-lap main event to take the win in the Winged Sprints over dash winner Tony Berry and Corey Harbison. Kevin Burck and Rod Nelson did not start the race after being involved in a back stretch crash in the heat race. Both cars suffered significant damage.

Jeff Smyth set fast time and dominated the Late Model 4 division’s 30-lap main event quickly tracking down race leader John Jackson to take the lead and win. Smyth also won the heat race. Jackson finished second, Paul McCarthy, the dash winner, third.

Next Saturday the ICAR Racing Series returns along with the Early Stocks and Hobby cars. Events start at 6pm.
