July 20th 2007 (Elma, Wash). - The Northwest Sprint Challenge Series lost a race to weather for the third time this season when Friday's preliminary event of the inaugural Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge was rained out at Grays Harbor Raceway.

Friday's event was to be the first of a two-day event, with Saturday's 40-lap A-Main paying $10,092 to win. The NSCS also lost its scheduled season opener at Grays Harbor on April 27 as well as a June 29 event at Oregon's Willamette Speedway.

A complete program of qualifying, heat races, a dash and main events are scheduled for Saturday's NSCS event. More information on the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series and its drivers can be found online at http://www.racenscs.com.

(Northwest Sprint Challenge Series) NSCS Brownfield purse experiences boost for Grays Harbor Raceway Event July 20th & 21st

ELMA, Wash. - In the past at Grays Harbor Raceway, the old Evergreen State Sprint Challenge closed Northwest Speed Week and was the showcase event for the old Northern Sprint Tour, being worth a solid $5,000 to win. It was annually one of the biggest sprint car weekends in the Pacific Northwest.

Things, however, have changed since June 16 of last year when Fred Brownfield was killed in an on track accident at Grays Harbor. His Northern Sprint Tour creation continued on with what would be its final season and questions were raised about Grays Harbor's future and that of the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge.

As for the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge itself, it was originally scheduled to be run for the 11th time as the opening event of Northwest Speed Week for the new Northwest Sprint Challenge Series and still award $5,000 to win. In February, however, new Grays Harbor Raceway promoter George Wade announced that the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge as it was is no more. The two-day event received a significant name change and an initial bump of the winner's share up to $7,500.

It's now the Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge.

This weekend will be bittersweet for the drivers, teams and everyone involved with the NSCS as the series will be part of the event named for the much respected and sorely missed promoter of the tour's predecessor series.

There will still be happy times, as evident by the excitement over this weekend's event. In an NSCS drivers meeting at Grays Harbor Raceway in April, Wade announced his hopes to eventually bring the winner's share to $10,092 and have the dollar amount awarded to each position on Saturday's A-Main end in 92, which was the car number for most of Brownfield's driving career, which included many championships at Skagit Speedway.

Just last month, it became a done deal, being the $10,092 Wade and many others hoped for. The A-Main will also pay $492 to start. Through donations and sponsorships, including lap sponsorships worth $92, more than $15,000 was raised and went straight to the purse, which now sits at about $45,000.

"It's awesome everyone's contributing," said Mitch Olson, who currently sits second in the NSCS point standings. "It shows how many people he touched. It's definitely one you want to win. It'd be nice if one of the Elma cars won."

It was nice indeed for local fans last year when, just over a month after Brownfield's death, track regular and eventual champion Jay Cole scored an upset victory in last year's Evergreen State Sprint Challenge over national star Jason Sides and NASCAR star Kasey Kahne.

Olson himself is hoping he is the Elma driver to win it, and maybe cut away at Roger Crockett's 85-point lead in the standings in the process.

Josh DeWitt is another driver excited for the bigger Fred Brownfield Memorial and the now even bigger Speed Week.

"It's really amazing. It definitely bumps up the competition. Everyone will
drive harder."

With Grays Harbor Raceway and its supporters boosting its purse for the Fred Brownfield Memorial, the NSCS now has $10,000+-to-win high-profile events book ending the largest Speed Week the Northwest has ever seen. Following three races in Oregon, Speed Week will close with the Bob's Burgers & Brew Skagit 360 Nationals, which has a $60,000 purse and will pay $10,000 to win.

"It brings a lot of attention here from people who don't think of the Washington. It's a big sport up here," DeWitt said about having two high-paying races for 360 sprint cars in the Northwest. "A lot of people will come out for Speed Week. It brings the best of the best."

"Credit to Shawna (Wilskey) and everyone to get it rolling and getting it as big as it is," Olson said.

Tim Sawyer Wins Gary Miller Mod Race July 14th At Stateline Speedway

Tim Sawyer Wins Gary Miller Mod Race July 14th At Stateline Speedway

POST FALLS, IDAHO – July 15, 2007 – After chasing race leader Rich Gimeno for 85-laps Spokane’s Tim Sawyer made the pass for the lead on the inside to win the 8th annual running of the Gary Miller Memorial Modified race Saturday night at Stateline Speedway.

Sawyer made his move around Gimeno on a restart with fifteen laps remaining. Gimeno had held off Sawyer on the long green flag runs but was unable to keep his car on the bottom groove exiting the turns opening the door to Sawyer.

Gimeno made one last charge after a caution for a one car spin on lap 88 but was unable to close the gap on the restart, allowing Sawyer to win his second race of the season.

Gimeno finished second after leading the most laps. Dan Noble took third, Randy Lerch fourth; both ran in the top five the entire race.

Frank Volz Jr., who set fast time and was charging along with Sawyer towards the top spot, was knocked out of the race on lap 47 when he made contact with a slower car while attempting to run the outside line.

Sawyer also won a dash along with Montana’s Ron Wright. Mark Weaver took the win the B heat. Gimeno won the A Heat.

Wes Helgeson darted to the lead in the 25-lap main event to take the win in the Winged Sprints over dash winner Tony Berry and Corey Harbison. Kevin Burck and Rod Nelson did not start the race after being involved in a back stretch crash in the heat race. Both cars suffered significant damage.

Jeff Smyth set fast time and dominated the Late Model 4 division’s 30-lap main event quickly tracking down race leader John Jackson to take the lead and win. Smyth also won the heat race. Jackson finished second, Paul McCarthy, the dash winner, third.

LEWIS ROLLS TO FIRST EVER LMCS SPOKANE RACEWAY PARK VICTORY JULY 14th

LATE MODEL CHALLENGE SERIES

SPOKANE, Wash. (July 14, 2007)–Gary Lewis captured the TC Transportation 125 held Saturday night at Spokane Raceway Park for the Late Model Challenge Series.

Garrett Evans was second followed by Jeff Jefferson.

Wes Rhodes and Jim Warn rounded out the top-5.

Rhodes and his Knight Fire Protection Chevrolet led the field to the green flag based on a six-car invert. Jefferson captured the Mechanix Wear Pole Award with a new track record on 17.866-seconds at a speed of 100.750 mph.

Warn held the early lead on the field through lap 14 before Evans moved by the Aurora, OR driver on the outside of turn No. 2.

Over the next 50 laps Evans extended his Leonard Evans Hyundai & Used Car Superstore Chevrolet to as much as a 10-car lead over Lewis who had disposed of Rhodes for second place over the first 20 laps of the event.

Evans blistering pace pushed all but seven cars to one lap down by the 78th circuit on the high-banked .500-mile surface.

Lewis, the series points leader coming into the sixth race of the season, saved his tires for a late race run and by lap 85 began to mount pressure on Evans.

Running to the back of Mark Owens on lap 97, Evans was forced to check up coming off turn No. 2 for the slowing Kalispell, MT driver opening the door for Lewis to squeeze by entering turn No. 3 for the lead.

The evening’s final caution flew on lap 109 and gave Evans one last chance to get past Lewis. The East Wenatchee, WA driver moved as close as two car lengths in the final laps but was unable to clear the LMCS points leader for the victory.

The drive of the evening belonged to MJ2 Ford driver Jefferson, who started in sixth based on the invert and battled his way through lapped traffic and a stubborn Owens to bring home a podium finish.

Lewis’ victory marks his second in a row and third overall for the 2007 season and increases his points lead over Jefferson heading into the Aug. 4 event to be held at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, ID.

“I could see that Garrett’s car was going away there a little bit and I was just riding around trying to save my tires,” said Lewis in victory lane. “With the 44 forcing Garrett to check up on the backstretch that was the break we needed and I was able to get by for the lead.

“I have to thank Eibach Springs, Travelodge of downtown Spokane, Nutter Racing Engines, Sandblasters and everyone at the Sign Factory for being there for us for this race. We’re on a roll with what we’re doing right now and I’m getting more comfortable with how this car feels. We’re in such a good groove right now and we’re going to focus on staying that way each week,” Lewis added.

For Evans, who led the most laps for the 125-lap event, there was a feeling of uncertainty approaching Owens late in the race, he said.

“We were talking about that on the radio about what he (Owens) was going to do when we got to him. I was getting off turn No.2 real good tonight but it was getting soft off (turn No.) 1 and then we came to him and that causes us to slow up and Gary got by.

“The track was great to race on and is an awesome place. We definitely don’t have a high-banked .500-mile to race on here in the Northwest like this one. I have to thank Rick from Spokane Raceway Park for having us and I hope we’re able to come back here next year,” Evans added.

While losing ground to Lewis in the points standings, Jefferson maintains the overall focus of his team heading towards Stateline in two weeks, he said.

“We’re out here trying to win every race and the points will work themselves out. With time running out tonight I knew we needed a caution to catch up there at the end but you’ve got to be smart with only a handful of laps left.”

The next event for the Late Model Challenge Series is set for Aug. 4, 2007 at Stateline Speedway. To learn more log onto www.latemodelchallenge.com
